SOHCO is an accredited Social Housing Institution, committed to the development and management of social housing in the East London, Cape Town and Durban. The company’s primary purpose is the development of quality, affordable residential property for lower income households. This includes accommodating families with special needs such as the disabled, young adults with a regular income and single parent families.
What is Social Housing?
Social housing is defined as: “A rental… housing option for low income persons at a level of scale and built form which requires institutionalised management and which is provided by accredited social housing institutions…”

Social Housing Institutions are non-profit companies which develop, own and manage affordable rental accommodation.
Social Housing Institutions (SHI’s) are accredited by the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA) to which they report to on a regular basis.

SOHCO ensures that all complexes are kept at a high standard and that operations are smooth and efficient. Security is provided on site 24 hours a day. All of our complexes have offices on site to deal with the complexities of running large residential housing complexes.

In order to qualify for social housing you need to meet a range of criteria set out by the Social Housing Act (No. 16 of 2008) and Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA).
If units are available and you qualify based on the required criteria, send us an enquiry via this website, you will then undergo a stringent application process. You will be given an application form, which is a personalised form to be completed by you (the applicant) which must be handed back to Sohco within a stipulated time period, along with all the necessary back up documentation that Sohco uses to determine if the applicant meets the Social Housing requirements. All applications are subject to a credit check and affordability assessment.
