Amalinda
In 1999 the SOHCO Amalinda Project was
initiated, with the support of
the Flemish government, to address the
prevailing shortage of social
housing stock in Buffalo City in the
Eastern Cape. Market surveys, land
assembly, planning and funding
applications were prepared and subsidies
approved in early 2000, for the
development of SOHCO’s first project,
Amalinda Village, in East London.
Construction of Amalinda Village, which
currently has 600 units, began in 2001.
It consists of a series of 12 to 20-unit
blocks, grouped around a central open
space. 493 units have two bedrooms, 65
units have one bedroom and 40 units have
three bedrooms. The design of the units
and housing complex allows for energy
and administrative efficiency. Sunlight
is maximized and rooms allow for easy
entertainment. The development has open
spaces and recreational spaces for
adults and children.
The village is close to shopping centres
and the industrial areas of Wilsonia
and Braelyn.
It is within walking
distance of the Frere Hospital and
recreational and education facilities
are within a five-kilometre radius.
